David Gentles was recognised as one of the best hockey umpires in the world.
David began umpiring when he was 15, and spent 32 years at the job, retiring when he was 47.
During his stellar career, David umpired 162 internationals, seven Champions Trophy tournaments, a Commonwealth Games, three World Cups and three Olympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London.
David received his Golden Whistle from the Federation International Hockey (FIH) for umpiring his 100th senior international match at the World Hockey Champions Trophy in Rotterdam.
In 2009, David was named the NSW Sports Federation Official of the Year.
